Background of the study

Nigerian Pidgin has emerged as a dominant lingua franca in the informal digital sphere, particularly on social media platforms such as Twitter. This study examines the impact of Nigerian Pidgin on communication trends in Abuja, focusing on how its flexible structure and expressive features influence online interactions. Nigerian Pidgin, with its dynamic vocabulary and simplified grammar, offers a unique medium for users to convey humor, solidarity, and socio-political commentary (Ajayi, 2023). The study analyzes Twitter posts to identify how Nigerian Pidgin facilitates rapid information exchange and cultural expression in a context marked by brevity and immediacy. By exploring trends, hashtags, and tweet structures, the research investigates the role of Nigerian Pidgin in shaping digital discourse and influencing user engagement. This examination contributes to broader discussions on language evolution in digital environments and highlights the potential for indigenous languages to thrive in new media contexts (Balogun, 2024; Okafor, 2025). The findings are expected to provide insights into the intersection of language, culture, and technology in urban Nigeria.

Statement of the problem

Despite the widespread use of Nigerian Pidgin on social media, particularly Twitter in Abuja, there is insufficient research on its impact on communication dynamics. The informal nature of Nigerian Pidgin may lead to both enhanced expressiveness and potential miscommunication due to its non-standardized structure (Ajayi, 2023). This research gap limits our understanding of how Nigerian Pidgin shapes digital interactions and influences public discourse. Without systematic analysis, the nuanced effects of this language variety on engagement and message clarity remain unclear. This study seeks to fill this void by analyzing Twitter trends and assessing the communicative impact of Nigerian Pidgin, thereby informing strategies for more effective digital communication (Okafor, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

1. To analyze the use of Nigerian Pidgin in Twitter posts from Abuja.

2. To evaluate its impact on user engagement and message clarity.

3. To provide recommendations for improving digital communication strategies.

Research questions:

1. How is Nigerian Pidgin used in Twitter trends in Abuja?

2. What effects does it have on communication clarity?

3. How can its use be optimized to enhance digital discourse?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it explores the role of Nigerian Pidgin in shaping social media communication, offering valuable insights into its impact on digital discourse in Abuja. The findings will inform linguists, social media strategists, and policymakers about the benefits and challenges of using Nigerian Pidgin online, contributing to more effective communication strategies in diverse digital environments (Okafor, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study is confined to analyzing the impact of Nigerian Pidgin on Twitter trends in Abuja. It does not extend to other social media platforms or regions.

Definitions of terms:

1. Nigerian Pidgin: An English-based creole widely used in Nigeria.

2. Social Media Communication: Interactions facilitated through online platforms.

3. Twitter Trends: Popular topics and hashtags on the Twitter platform.
